I was born and raised in Taiwan. My family was proud that I was the first one to enter college. I majored in sociology and almost made it to minor in foreign language. Fascinated with journalism and films (and frankly not knowing exactly what to do), I ventured out to University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School. I worked in the industry briefly afterward, but decided to return to academia. I went to a doctoral program of mass communication housed in today’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I enjoyed the time at Chapel Hill and was very fortunate to work with several wonderful mentors, including Robert L. Stevenson, Jane D. Brown, and Donald L. Shaw. After earning my Ph.D. in 1998, I was extremely lucky to find a job and have continued to work as a college professor. It truly is the best job one can have – constantly meeting new people, learning new knowledge, and discovering new things! For my leisure, I enjoy hiking, gardening, swimming, and traveling to different parts of the world.
